The gory details: Mistakes of a first-time author

by Sally Hogshead on November 6, 2012

Oh, the mistakes I made when publishing my first book.

Ahhh! Errrrrgh.

Here in this video, I’ll share a few mistakes I made (so you can avoid them), along with a couple of little victories (so you can replicate them).

0 The gory details: Mistakes of a first time author

In the video, I mention that you can get a free copy of my first book– grab it here.

The book is named Radical Careering: 100 Truths to Jumpstart Your Job, Your Career, and Your Life. Despite making a few mistakes along the way, I’m still proud of it.  :)  It was published by Penguin, and I normally wouldn’t be able to post it online. But after Fascinate was released, Penguin gave me the rights back. Now I can make it available for you, for free. (Woohoo, free!)

My question for you: What mistake taught you the most in your career?

Tell me in the comments below.

Sally,
I love this book!  As a master career counselor, I highly recommend it to clients and find it very inspiring.  Your journey is a beacon of light to readers in the process of navigating the complex and seemingly overwhelming process of a career change.  The key to radical careering is all about optimistic energy and resilience.  You packaged both with amazing authenticity.  All the best!!!!!

My most “educational” mistake was trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead of replicating what already worked, I tried to run my business in a new way, and learned WHY things are done (successfully) the way they are done.

No one is perfect though. But with the hardship you encounter can make us more even better. Thanks for showing it to us.

Sally this video is excellent on many levels. I enjoyed watching it, even though I’m not an author. I love your video set and your lighting. I can’t believe you said all that without a cut! Heading off to download your book right now. Thanks!
